I’m going to take my driver’s test for the second time on Wednesday. Not going to lie, feeling real nervous. I just lose a lot of confidence whenever I have someone unfamiliar in the car with me because I’m always nervous about making a simple mistake, and when I make a mistake, I lose composure, and when that happens, everything goes to shit. It didn’t help that last time I failed, I was scolded and berated by my dad and was told by him that I deserved to fail, despite being nervous because he was being a real asshole backseat driver that day. I don't know what'll happen Oppo, I hope I don't fuck up horribly, but I easily could. I want to drive my Eldorado by myself, I want to drive with my friends, I want to finally have it so I can get a job, earn some cash and move out. I'm just unsure about how it'll go down. Wish me luck Oppo, I hope to get it right this time.

Never stop practicing, even after you pass the test.

I’ve been driving for years, and I still act like it’s all about precision. I haven’t stopped trying to bulls-eye stop lines, or trying to center the car in the parking space.

Good luck! Look, I suspect you don’t want to hear this POV, but I think it’s actually good that you have to drive in a distracting crucible like that for your test. When you can do it and not get flustered, that’s when you know you’re really ready to solo. Your friends, the radio, other drivers, etc. will always be competing for your attention, and your ability to filter and react to unanticipated things from others calmly will be absolutely crucial to your survival.

Embrace the pain and conquer it! (but I do not approve of your dad berating you; that kind of thing is almost never helpful).

Automatic, my car's got an auto. I haven't even driven a stick.

None of that stuff is going to help you. Drop all that and envision this; the most confident guy in the world (you)strolling into the test, passing it, then leaving with his license as expected with no significant setbacks. Don’t be overconfident (I’m so good, I don’t even need to study for it. I’m the chosen one!) nor underconfident (I’m probably going to get into a fatal 10 car pileup that kills everyone else but me, then go to prison for manslaughter and get the electric chair, but not before meeting bubba in the prison shower and get shanked over a pizza slice). You need just the right amount. Drop all that nonsense and stick with that, and keep thinking that until you feel yourself becoming more confident.

Remember; there is a feedback loop between belief and behavior. Think about something hard enough, and you’ll contribute to the outcome.

I've had my license for 17 years and I still don't like driving people I don't know.

Good luck! Even if you aren’t.. Look confident! When you seem confident and make a mistake and stay confident, realizing what you did wrong, you get looked at higher than showing that you aren’t confident.
